electrical appliances

Appliances are extremely important in everyday life. So much is the dependence that you cannot afford to have them malfunctioning at all. You will observe that larger appliances like dishwashers or ovens usually do not cause much trouble. However, there may be times when you have to call an appliance repair service provider.

Alternatively, if the problem is not critical then you can also try to repair it yourself. The former will cost you money, and with the latter, you can actually save some money as well as get the machine working in no time. However, in case you decide to do the repairs yourself you can follow some of the tips given below for safety.

Brush up your knowledge of appliances

  • Smaller appliances are easier to handle. Most of these smaller machines have some blades and a fan along with a heating element and some rotating beaters. To repair these, you simply have to check the mechanical linkages. They also consume lesser electricity so you will find them working on 110-120-volt circuits. Their plugs also have only two blades. The amount of voltage consumption is usually mentioned on all-electric appliances.
  • The larger appliances consume more electricity, approximately 220-240 volts. Their plugs consist of a prong and two blades. These are usually connected to the grounding outlet or with an adapter plug.

Larger appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, etc. come with a motor, a pump, a timer, in addition to switches, valves, and solenoids. In case there is an issue with the control device, then the functioning of the entire appliance might be affected. Yet again, if the problem is only with a power device, then the function related to that will be affected.

  • It is essential to diagnose the problem before attempting to fix it. The best way is to check each and every part and function to zero-in on the exact problem. The devices work in a logical manner and will stop at the first place where it faces the issue.
  • Before beginning always remember to disconnect the power supply to the device before appliance repair or even testing the device. After powering on the device, try not to touch it, simply observe if the function is taking place.
  • Many parts of a machine might be joined together using screws or rivets, and you need to open them to get to the issue. Remember that you cannot open rivets, so take the help of professional appliance repair service providers. You can always open the screws by yourself.
  • Malfunctioning parts should be replaced rather than repaired because their longevity gets compromised. Installing a new part ensures that the device will continue working properly for quite some time. In case an exact replacement is unavailable, try to go for a substitute that fits the same space and works equally well. Spare parts need not be from the same brand unless specified by the manufacturer.

However, if you are unable to find a replacement, it is best to contact them directly. You will need the model number and data of the part to be replaced while contacting the manufacturer.

  • While diagnosing the problem, the first thing to check is the power supply. In most cases, appliances fail because they do not receive power. Ensure that the device is plugged in properly and the outlet is also working fine. You can use a voltage tester to see if the outlet is working.
  • Check if all the fuses are connected with the power board, and the appliance is not tripped or blown. You can try pushing the reset buttons to get the device on track. Larger appliances like washing machines and dryers, come with a reset button. Some cooking ranges also come with fuses like plugs, so ensure that the fuses are intact.
  • In case your appliance runs on water or gas check whether there is an adequate supply of the fuel.
  • The appliance manual is very important, and you should go through it while attempting to diagnose or repair the product. There are many tips for troubleshooting small issues and also understanding when you need to take the help of a professional appliance repair service provider.

Whether you are repairing the appliances yourself or hiring a professional appliance repair service provider, the above-mentioned tips are extremely important to ensure the longevity of your product and your own safety.
